Going further... with our fish.

For our next stage in producing an artwork, we discussed the types of rubbish and pollution we had found washed up on Oreti Beach. We wanted to convey a message through the artwork to show the effect rubbish has on our local environment and in the sea.

Room 7 are now ready to work on a background for mounting their fish. We decided to sketch colourful pastel sea creatures. (smaller ones for the background, and slightly larger ones for the middle ground.) The background also had to include some items of rubbish they had seen washed up on the beach.
After that, they experimented with dye using a water wash effect and colour mixing. The children experimented with mixing colours to show a "murky area" in their background to portray the presence of pollution. (Click to enlarge)

While the backgrounds were left to dry, Room 7 carefully cut out their pastel and coloured pencil fish. Mrs Burdon showed the class how to make a flax fish. Many children became very competent at making a variety of different sized fish. (Click to enlarge)

Sean's Grandma logged on in Scotland and thought the site was really amazing! She especially loved the artwork and hopes you'll post some pictures when they're completed.
Keep up the good work!
