Going Further ...

At this stage of the inquiry, the children used their knowledge of setting goals to design a maths plan using the computer software 'Kidsperation.' As well as clearly showing the goal setting process, they also experimented with the features the software provided. A lot of problem-solving (and enjoyment) took place to create their final plan. Here is a selection of some of the plans. Over the next few days more will be added to the blog. (Click to enlarge)

Children's Choice Time

This week Room 7 chose to bring along their treasured collections for 'Children's Choice Time.' They were keen to invite other classes to share their collections and answer any questions.

More 'Magic Box Poems'

The Fire Breathing Box

I will put in my box
some nature coming to life,
a kingdom full of knights and dragons.

I will put in my box
the AC/DC coming to life,
a mighty whole candy-land,
a feeling of being a world champion of motor-cross.

I will keep my box in the Atlantic,
it has got the richest and finest treasure.

By Clayton

The BAD Box

I will put in my box
a doll lying down,
a bang of a hammer,
a bar of chocolate,
a freaky NIGHTMARE,
a dead bird.

It's hinges are made of rhino horns,
it's lid is made of lettuce.

I will put in my box,
an angry elephant,
an action figure,
and a door leading to no-where.
I will keep the box where the sharks live.

Finding Out

It became apparent from Room 7's spider diagrams that there were some misconceptions on what a goal was. After many sessions of working in groups to identify individual 'I can' statements' followed by the next step, 'My goal' is, then 'How I can achieve this,' the children had a clear understanding of what a goal was. This was highlighted by the precise way they communicated their goals during the student led interviews with their parents.

As well as goal setting in literacy, and numeracy, Room 7 also identified a 'habit of mind' that they could improve and focus on.
These stars were completed at the beginning of our goal setting learning journey. (Click on an image to enlarge)

Our Magic Box Poems

Room 7's poem of the week was called 'The Magic Box' by Kit Wright. Here are some of the children's poems. They contain true and 'magical' thoughts and ideas.

The Magic Box

I will put in my box
silky webs glowing,
and a cheetah going past.

I will put in the box
raw onions,
the crash of lightning,
the smell of ice-cream.

The lid is made out of bubblegum

I will put in my box
the sea rolling in
and a monster chasing me.
The sound of drums booming and banging.

I will keep my magic box under my bed.

By Lily

The Magic Box

I will put in my box
a squeak of a mouse,
a walking bus,
a fluffy cat
and a roar of a lion.

The taste of a juicy apple,
A drop of rain,
the smell of dust,
a feel of soft ice-cream
and a bad dream of falling off a cliff.

Its lid is made out of gold and steel.
Its hinges are made out of pink, green and red eyeballs.
I will keep it up a bubble tree.

The Mad Box

I will put in my box
the sound of people screaming,
the taste of raw cabbage,
the sight of dinosaurs stomping
and a volcano erupting.

My box is fashioned out of tin and gold.
The lid is made out of moons
and the hinges are made out of garbage.
I will keep my box in a closet locked up.

The Misty Box

In my box I will put
a wonderful feeling of being famous,
the lovely fluffy feeling of touching a fluffy cat,
and the sight of the most wonderful birthday presents.

A rainy day, but through the mist, an Otatara team on a pitch.
What a sound a guitar strumming is!
A catchy meow from my cat Penny
and a rotten chicken taste of dog biscuit.

The icy taste of an ice-block.
An ice-cream that each time you eat a piece another piece comes back.
The feeling of an icy cold snowflake landing on my tongue
and the sweet smell of the fresh salt water.

The look of a nocturnal kitten creeping in the night. Scary!
A door that leads to a place unknown,
a land of ice-cream and chocolate with chocolate streams
and the blood colour of red joined with sky blue.

Oh the wonderful magic box has a lid made of jewels.
The hinges are made of sparkly silver foil.
It is wrapped up in pinky, purply satin.
